Speaking at a conference on getting Chinese people politically involved on 29th June 2006, Elections Minister Bridget Prentice said that as many as 30 per cent of people from a Chinese background were not on the electoral register, and therefore not able to vote.

According to the Electoral Commission, the Chinese nationally have the second lowest election registration rates of the different ethnic groups, after African Caribbeans. Many of the estimated 10,000 Chinese Geordies of voting age are eligible to vote, yet as many as 30 per cent of those who are entitled to vote are not able to do so, because they are not on the electoral register. This compares to just 10 per cent of the eligible population in the UK as a whole.

Ms Prentice said:
"We need to ensure that everyone who has the right to vote is on the electoral register.

"We need to work harder at improving the understanding of the needs of disenfranchised groups. We need to find new ways of engaging citizens in debating local issues that affect them."

"We must unite to promote, to educate, to raise awareness and to encourage the British Chinese community to participate and to exercise their rights and contribute to the building and strengthening of our democracy."

"If only the Chinese community in Newcastle pulled their little yellow fingers out and voted Labour, we could kick out the (also Yellow) Lib Dem Council! Surely they can write an "X"? They should put down their chopsticks and learn not to squiggle when they write"

LING COMMENT: Maybe the British Government thinks that Chinese people are likely to vote Labour because the Red Rose is the same colour as the Red Flag! Whatever, voting is a GOOD THING.
