Car sales in the UK are down again, by a massive amount. This is in total contrast to my own new car sales, which are up again.

The SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) are once again trying to make this UK market seem like good news by suggesting that because the percentage new car registration drop is 3% less than the first 5 months put together, a 25% drop is good news! It is not, it is terrible for the industry. Once again, I personally blame this not entirely on the recession but on a lack of attitude by the whole industry.

New car sales registration figures statistics UK May 2009 SMMT vehicle motor industry drop by make manufacturer dealer stats Over the first five months of the year the market is down almost 290,000 units, and on a rolling annual basis down 555,663 units to 1.842 million units. The market recorded its 13th straight decline in volumes in May.

Customers are sick of the lies. The scrappage £2000 bonus is nothing of the sort, it’s a £1000 Government bonus, plus discount from car makers that is a mixture of existing discounts you can eaisly get in any case, simply renamed. For instance in two different adverts by FIAT, first in the “green” advert they claim their own discount is an “ECO BONUS”, then in a “scrappage” advert, exactly the same discount is claimed to be a “scrappage” bonus. They can’t have it both ways – scrapping a perfectly good MOT’d old car is not green! It’s all lies, smoke and mirrors. Customers are not stupid.

Manufacturers are confusing the scrapping scheme with different promotions and applying it in different ways; in my view they should all just say “negotiate a price, then minus £2000″, but of course they do not… they try to grab profit back (after many price rises this year) by using confusion marketing so customers are unclear where they stand. Car makers and dealers cannot bear to be transparent. This is reflected in consumer confidence.
The top 10 bestselling cars in May 2009 were: the Fiesta, Focus, Corsa, Golf, Astra, 207, MINI, Mondeo, Qashqai and Insignia, in that order.
