Car sales figures March 2009 UK registrations vehicle sales SMMT market drop statistics manufacturers and dealers

March 2009 new car sales figures from the SMMT are terrible. While my own sales are up, Paul Everitt (SMMT) needs to take (at least part) personal responsibility for this month’s terrible overall industry sales figures – AND RESIGN.
His championing of the ludicrous scrappage scheme clearly means that consumers are delaying car purchasing decisions, awaiting a much-hyped £2000 bribe for any banger they can lay their hands on… Dealers who go bust as a result of these March figures being icing on the cake for their bank support should look to the useless industry bodies, as they have blood on their hands.
Putting out rafts of PR sheets aimed at the public about an “imminent” scheme that will never happen is so stupid by both the SMMT and RMIF. They are like a broken record, once again in the SMMT response to the March new-car sales figures! Am I the only person in the motor industry who can see the Emperor’s Clothes?
Heads should roll at the top. The sales figures are (at least partly) a self-inflicted wound. Scrappage is stupidity.
First, scrappage is environmental terrorism, crushing perfectly good older cars – look at all the perfectly good older cars that will disappear. Second, it will create a short-term sales rise followed by sales drought (again), it is artificial manipulation; jam today. Third, most cars in the UK are imported – at least Germany has a domestically owned car industry; the only UK-built small cars to benefit will be the Micra (old) and the Mini (expensive). Last – why not scrap ALL consumer goods after 9-years for a bribe? Like TV’s, kettles and vacuum cleaners?
Car manufacturers have had several price-rise rounds this year, ready to cream off profits from a potential scrappage scheme.
Scrapping 9-year old cars is complete economic madness for the UK. Do taxpayers want their cash poured into car dealers selling mainly foreign built cars? This is industry miscalculation on a gross scale and the results are seen in the sales figures.
I am ashamed to think that the “sales” has been removed from “car sales” and begging-bowl politics have taken over. Has the Chancellor REALLY got all this free cash to support (mainly) foreign car companies? Car dealers should get out there and SELL!
When was the last time YOU were contacted by someone pro-actively canvassing to sell you a new car. Laziness and handouts rule, in the UK new car market! Jeez, am I mad? You bet!
