New Car Sales SMMT Registrations January 2009. Figures, totals and volume.

Yeoww! UK new car sales in January 2009 plummeted on last year. These are figures from the SMMT. (pic below)
My own car leasing figures are up by 20% on January 2008! How on earth can some car dealers survive? For instance, Alfa Romeo only have 257 registrations in total (remember these figures are not sales, they are registered cars and include cars run by the manufacturer, dealer demos and press cars). Massive drops in sales figures from Dodge (down to just 172 cars), Lexus (down by 50%), Mitsubishi (down by 66%), Renault (down by 46%) and Subaru (down by a massive 65%). Even BMW and Mercedes fell sharply. Honda dropped nearly 40%. Proton, Perodua, Ssangyong, MG, Hummer (just 1 car!) and Cadillac (just 2 cars!) are effectively dead.
There is a massive lack of enthusiasm in the industry to sell cars. I have heard loads of dealers whinging. Mandleson has screwed the retail car trade, but you need to fight! Not moan. Hence my own upward figures! I am very active!!
Automotive Management (the trade newspaper) wrote this pathetic letter for dealers to send to their MP (have you seen anything so laughable?). Fill in the blanks. What a wet response…

AM Buy A Car Campaign 2009
Dear MP
I am sure that you are aware of the particular problems facing the UK motor industry, which is felt most urgently by us local dealers.
People are just not buying cars – although we are doing our best to persuade customers that NOW is the time to buy a car (low finance rates, reduced VAT and great deals available).
The local dealers, like ourselves, play an important role in the local community.
We recruit and train our staff locally – we employ XX people in (town names). Our staff support the local economy – they spend a large proportion of their wages locally.
We have invested in the very latest equipment to service and maintain your constituents’ cars and vans – enabling them to conduct their business too.
We support community issues and charities (state examples).
The UK Government has stepped up and recognised the need to support the manufacturers, but without the dealer network to sell the cars, this help will be a waste of time, effort and money.
We need help to stimulate the local economy and start selling cars again. If we fail, then xx people will lose their jobs and there will be a knock-on effect throughout the community.
Please be our voice in Parliament and obtain a commitment to enable us to continue trading through these very difficult times.
Regards

I tell you what, I would be embarrassed to think that adult car dealers rely on this childish, miserable approach. That letter is useless. It just moans. What do they want the MPs to do? Apart from “be our voice” and “obtain a commitment”. A commitment for WHAT? And “The Government has stepped up” – WHAT???? Has it? I must have missed that. I has simply put a loan guarantee scheme in place, but then it guarantees all the bank stuff in the UK anyway. Sheesh. Idiots. Get out there and sell some cars, instead.
Here are the registration figures for January 2009:

Here’s what the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers) say:
“There is a clear need to stimulate demand for new vehicles in the UK market. A number of EU member states have launched scrappage incentive schemes, which have the benefit of boosting consumer confidence and delivering significant environmental improvements,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “The UK motor industry is urging UK government to introduce a similar scheme and help sustain jobs and businesses throughout the sector.”
…it’s the SMMT and a few more dealers who need scrapping!

Meanwhile in China:
China may have surpassed the United States to become the world’s largest auto market based on monthly sales in January, according to analysts and forecasts.
General Motors, the leading US automaker, estimates that China sold about 790,000 vehicles last month.
Wow!
