Richard Hammond

Call me a bit naive, but if drive you a balsa and fibreglass home-built jet car at over 300mph on an airfield runway (and they are bumpy!) you might expect to crash. And if you crash at 300+ mph, you might expect to be seriously hurt or die.
All these idiots expressing sympathy should direct their sympathy more at his stupidity – and the quest for Top Gear ratings. Hammond wasn’t brave, here, just foolhardy and they were trying to get viewers. Certainly managed that! BBC News hasn’t delved into this area very deeply. Perhaps Clarkson should apply his sharp analytical wit to this situation? If I strapped myself to my nuclear rocket and launched it (if I could), in a bid for nothing but publicity or web-ratings, would I be “brave”?
Hammond chose to put himself in this situation, no doubt encouraged by Andy Wilman. No doubt we all paid a fortune in taxes for the helicopter and hospital, too, or will the BBC (us again) pay? Get real, self-inflicted-injury would get you on a charge in the Army. While no one wants Hammond to die, if he does it’s his stupid fault. Has everyone else missed that? Why not be straight enough to point it out? Duh?
Also, what about the other 5 people that died on British roads yeaterday, and the dozen serious injuries? Why didn’t they make it onto BBC news? Because no one gives a flying fuck about them, apart from their families. That’s why.
Is this the cult of personality, or the BBC looking after one of their own, someone deciding the story would “help” Top Gear, or just that the other poor souls (who probably didn’t choose to do something risky) are boring fuckwits and weren’t being stupid enough?
On the 10 O’Clock news yesterday, it was higher-rated than the Hungary situation, the Indonesian situation, the geonocide in Somalia (for God’s sake!) and the cat-up-the-tree situation. Certainly beat 20 Iraqis being killed, but they don’t really count, eh? Makes me mad.

I think you represent a small minority. I made sensible argument about Richard Hammond. I certainly expressed the sentiment that I did wish him to recover. But his actions and those of Top Gear should be questioned. You should note that I have spoken to one of the most senior people in the BBC, and I certainly got a much more thoughtful and sensible reaction to yours and it was indicated that similar questions to mine are being raised within the BBC itself. I feel Top Gear will be lucky if it survives this episode. I also notice that Andy Wilman, the man behind Top Gear has remained silent (as far as I can tell) and that Clarkson is not spouting his usual rubbish about health and safety. Strange, huh? Surley it is an ideal opportunity for both to be man enough to admit that they have been foolish, too?
Your racist comments do not bother me, as they show most sensible people your true state of mind and, in fact, are quite helpful in showing others your true position.
I am confused why you bother to read or comment on my site if it is so worthless to you. I would be interested to see if you are brave enough not to hide behind anonymity, and exactly how great your own contribution to our society is? I probably pay more taxes in one year in the UK, than you pay in your lifetime.
Oh, and you will be pleased to hear that BT (your ISP) has taken interest in your offensive comments. They know exactly the IP address you have used, now, which was 81.150.210.50. They have said “BT takes the abuse of our network very seriously and will take action against any customer found to be in breach of the BT Terms and Conditions. In order for us to take further action against this offender we will need you to send us the server logs to show the IP Address used and the exact time the message was sent. Once we have this information we will be able to identify the account used and take action against the person responsible.” Good old BT, eh?

Well, I arrived here just to know how Richard is doing (you know, googling RH situation).
I am stunned by you, Ling, and Joe.
Fortunatly, I´m from a place that british call third world. Imagine that.
We discovered the world once before…
Here in Lisbon are people who cares about Richard and his family. Only because his work is good. Only because Top Gear is a great show.
So, Ling and Joe, grow up.
Hey Richard, be well asap.
PS: Ling and Joe, sorry about my poor poor english. But you know, its my third language.

When someone makes smithereens of themselves testing an overpowered vehicle for the emotionally stunted Top Gear types I have the same sentiments as when a bull fatally gores the matador – well done the bull. Unfortunately the smug smirking Clarkson wasn’t in driving seat – then there could have been a day of national celebration.

Joe Bloggs is the perfect example of the emotionally stunted Top Gear types – reminds me of the fundamentalists who say “If you describe us as violent we will kill you” – case proven

Webcat, stop being STUNNED.
They caused all this for the ratings/publicity of a public-funded TV show. Questions should be asked. – Ling

Jack Martin – while your brevity means you are simplifying the arguments, I definitely fall on your side of the fence.
Thinking about it, I dispute whether 300mph should be called “driving”? Due to the aerodynamics at that speed, I think he is actually “flying” but with a negative lift keeping the car on the runway.
It is interesting that Hammond was probably even exceeding the airspeed limit, for altitudes less than 10,000 feet. If the car had been an aeroplane, that speed would have been quite illegal (private airfield or not). – Ling

Webcat,
Chinglish is my third language, too, BTW (after Mandarin and Cantonese), stop apologising for being Portugese, you are just bitter about Macau. – Ling
