“SAFE SPEED” Given Opportunity To Rant! – I Hate This Rabble.

I just read the following news:

A MOTORING group today described new Government guidance on speed limits for local roads as “flawed and deadly”. Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman wants councils to review speed limits, with the possibility of some roads having lower limits.

But the Safe Speed road safety organisation said: “The new guidance is based on faulty foundations and will ultimately cause road deaths to increase.”

Now, I have had some experience of SAFE SPEED. I spent a week on their forum fending off their extreme views. The organisation is seriously flawed. It is a single-issue, ego-driven collection of middle class, white, male, “professional”, superior beings. They have hardly no female members, have hardly any non-white members and are led by a cult of personality figure, Paul Smith. They think anyone who is not an enlightened member of Safe Speed is a fool, idiot, road-death-conspiracy-theory-ist, government apologist, fool, dangerous or bad driver, uneducated and a fool.

A balanced opinion of SAFE SPEED exists on Wikipedia, which describes Paul Smith thus: Safe Speed was founded by Paul Smith, a former professional engineer, now an “advanced motorist and road safety enthusiast”. Since founding the organisation in 2001, Smith ran the project as a hobby from his home in Scotland for some time but in 2003, following a period of illness in which his self-employed computer engineering business ran down, he took it up full time at some significant personal cost. Although Smith has always used the word “we” when discussing Safe Speed on the website, it is not clear whether it has other members. And Safe Speed’s claims and aims are disputed, but the group has a vocal following, recently raising £15,000 from donations to ward off closure due to debts incurred in Smith’s early months of illness. While many road safety campaigns are registered charities or limited companies, Safe Speed is not. Their funding appeal makes no distinction between personal and corporate debt.

George Monbiot has said: “They call themselves libertarians; I think they’re antisocial bastards”

Along with Mr Monbiot, I dislike this organisation intently. People would do well to think hard about Safe Speed’s views before jumping to agree with it, which is a tempting first reaction.
