The Volkswagen Golf Mk6 is the successor for the Mk5 Golf, and was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Auto Show in October. Volkswagen released pictures and information on 6 August 2008, prior to the official unveiling. The Volkswagen Golf MK 6 was released to the European market in winter 2008. Major investment has been made in production efficiency, with a claimed productivity improvement at launch of nearly 20% in comparison with the Golf MK5 Model, and further gains planned for the next twelve months. In the United States and Canada, the car will be sold as the Volkswagen Golf when it arrives in showrooms in early September 2009, dropping the "Rabbit" badge that was used for the Volkswagen Golf Mk5. The four cylinder internal combustion engines offered at launch include a range of gasoline / petrol engines with outputs of between 59 kW (80 PS; 79 hp) and 118 kW (160 PS; 158 hp). Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engines offering 81 kW (110 PS; 109 hp) and 103 kW (140 PS; 138 hp) are also listed. History of previous models suggests that the range of engines available will vary during the model run and according to market: the company is talking confidently about launching in Germany during 2009 a Volkswagen BlueMotion low emissions Golf and, in more general terms of possible alternative fuel versions later. Improvements in equipment level on the domestic market Golfs include, for the first time in a Golf, the inclusion of air conditioning as standard. All North American Golf GTIs will offer Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), adaptive chassis control (DCC), and 19-inch wheels as standard equipment. Base Golf engine will keep the 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder in the current Mk5 Rabbit and Mk5 Jetta. The VW GTI will get a 2.0-litre TSI, and joining these will be the new 2.0-litre TDI. A 1.8-litre TSI may come in to replace the 2.5L five-cylinder. Volkswagen's Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) will feature more prominently than ever before on the Volkswagen Golf Mk6, possibly eliminating the option of a traditional automatic gearbox.[citation needed] With safety features such as seven airbags and standard Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) the Volkswagen Golf Mk6 has been awarded a five-star rating by the Euro NCAP crash test agency.
